It wasn’t really an advice. She was studying Literature when we were dating. She frequently talked about the books she read, most of which I wasn’t interested. One of those novels she mentioned was “The American”. Her favorite line was “Don’t give away your plate until you eat your fill.” She said that it pertained to being ready for marriage, but I don’t know back then how matrimony and food can be related. Only the French know.
I mentioned the F word because I was on my graduate studies when I met Aude. She was spending a year away from her native Paris. It was lust at first sight. After what seemed to be a passionate start, our relationship gradually cooled off. We argued and broke up. That was when I came to a crossroad; I wanted her badly. So I tried to be interested in foreign movies. I also read the books that Valerie loved (she would be laughing if she found out). Culture wasn’t part of my vocabulary, but I made an effort to like it.
Aude and I were back in each others’ arms. I guess that was how to get your ex girlfriend to want you back. Believe or not, marriage is on my mind nowadays. We talked about it. No date set yet.
